  • The Green Perspective: Nature's Numerous Color Combinations of "Green"

About the Artist

Morgan Samuel Price was instilled from an early age with a profound respect for nature. Morgan was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Her earliest memories are of the beautiful rolling hills of rural Ohio. Moving with her family to New Smyrna Beach, Florida, at age nine introduced her to the lushness of the tropics.

As a child, Sunday drives through the countryside introduced Morgan to nature. Her fervor for art was further fueled by frequent outings to the Cleveland Art Museum.

After graduating from the prestigious Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, Morgan began her professional art career at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Missouri. This was followed by work as Creative Director in a publishing firm and then an independent endeavor in architectural rendering.

In 1972 Morgan reached a turning point and successfully began her career as a fine artist. By 1979 Morgan was conducting workshops around the country and exhibiting in national exhibitions in New York City. She has studied with many prominent artists including Loren Wilford and Robert Carl Cogar.

Today, Morgan enjoys sharing her painting career with others through her world wide workshops, educational DVD's, and her book "Oil Painting with a Basic Palette". Morgan has recently published a new book titled, "Turn on the Light A Touchstone to Plein Air Painting".

Morgan Samuel Price is an elected member of the following prestigious art societies:

Allied Artists of America - New York, NY
American Artists Professional League - New York, NY

About the Workshop

The color "Green" is a very popular topic in workshops. Many artists find the use of green a stumbling block. The color green can become too garish. It is a color that is hard to control and manipulate. On the palette the color green appears one way, yet on the painting, it can appear another. When on location the plein air artist is surrounded with thousands of variations of green, and under all kinds of circumstances.

In order to make this less complicated, this workshop is designed to introduce Nature's color green and how to produce it.

The Arial perspective, color theory, and the value of the color will be demonstrated. The reasons behind the choices is clarified and presented in numerous scenarios.

This information will enhance the artist's ability to take their "Greens" to the next level.

Demos will be in oil, but Morgan is also well-known for her watercolors and students may work in oil or watercolor. Please let Richeson staff know which medium you will be using as paint and brushes are included in the workshop fee.

The workshop will be held in the studio and en plein air. Studio easels are provided for indoor work. You may wish to bring your own plein air easel, or we will make a French easel available for your use (please reserve ahead).

In each workshop the following topics are explained and demonstrated: Design & Composition, Drawing, Sketching, Color Theory, Mixing Color, Perspective, Ariel Perspective, Value, Building paint layers, Mediums, Varnishes, Brushes and Brushwork.

The lecture-painting demonstration is designed to explain the necessary academic principles. If the principle is Value, the use of Value is explained in detail. The type of illusions that Morgan demonstrates differs from day to day.

Each morning Morgan will conduct a painting demonstration on location - weather permitting. Most workshops are composed of beginning, intermediate, and advanced artists. In the afternoon each artist has individual time with Morgan to ask questions. Workshops are designed to "shop for information".

The "critique" portion of the workshop is scheduled at the end of the daily painting session. The critique is designed to point out the strengths of the painting. It can be held on location or back at the studio.
