About the Workshop

Students will learn to depict a realistic still life using oil or soft pastels. Painting with a concept will be stressed. Teacher demonstrations and individual critiques will round out the week of intensive study of painting from life. A deeper understanding of size, placement, and quality of paint, edges, color and values will be explored. Students who have had no drawing/painting are encouraged to attend as well as those who are experienced painters. Students will think about painting holistically and relate all components of painting to the painting process. Participants have the option of using either oil paints or soft pastels.

Class participants will work with paint each day. Mary will demo on Monday and Wednesday a.m. Students will paint the remainder of the time. Individual critiques of student work will follow each day. Students are encouraged to bring in work completed outside of class PAINTED FROM LIFE, not photos on a designated day for a critique. No slides will be reviewed.

Focus for the week will be on paint application, creating a sense of three dimensional form, and size and placement. No drawing is needed. Students are invited to bring in still life items to use in sets ups if desired.
